Himachal Pradesh Renuka
Renuka Wildlife sanctuary is one of the oldest sanctuaries in Himachal Pradesh state of India. Location of this sanctuary is Sirmour district. This sanctuary is declared as Abhyaranya because of located in very small area. This sanctuary is well connected by road from Nahan and Paonta Sahib and other major districts of the country as well. A zoo is also located there and one of the oldest zoo in Himachal Pradesh. During 1975, a lion pair was brought to this zoo from Junagadh of Gujarat and likewise in 1983 a Mithun pair was also gifted to this zoo by late Prime Minister Mr. Rajiv Gandhi. In 1986 another pair of Mithun was brought from Arunachal Pradesh. These animals are increasing the dignity and beauty of this zoo. This zoo is most familiar as on the hills the varieties of various animals are rare.
Renukaji temple is the most important establishment in Sirmour district. In this area the temple of Renukaji is established. Renukaji was the wife of Rishi Yamdagni. Parshuram was the youngest son of this couple. Once to fulfill the order of her father, he killed his mother and later begged to his father to return the life of mother. His father agreed on this. King of the area, Sahasravahu, murdered four sons of Renukaji to marry her in the absence of Yamdagni and Parshuram. Renukaji jumped into the pond and disappeared. Since then the pond is renamed as Renuka Lake. A temple of Renukaji and Parshuram is located there to commemorate that religious event.
In this sanctuary Snow Leopards, Himalayan Bear, Sambhar, White Spotted Deer, Barking Deer, Wolf, Jackal and Jungle Cat etc are naturally habited. Greenery in the area is the source of making natural habitat to the small wild species like Jackals and Wolfs, while Leopards, Himalayan Bear are habited behind the tough rocky dens. Except four legged species, there are various birds including some migratory birds are also habited. Nearby reservoir is the main habitat of these birds. In the summer season various migratory birds come in this sanctuary from Siberia and Mongolia.
Food Chain and ecological balance is one of the specialties of this sanctuary. According to the geographical survey of India, this sanctuary is one of the most balanced wildlife sanctuaries in view of the biodiversity.
Flora and Fauna
Green and tall sky high tree of the area, grassy land pieces; green and dense slopes of the sanctuary are floral property of this area. This vegetation not only provides an ecologically balanced area but also create scenic beauty and picturesque view for the visitors.
Snow Leopard and Himalayan Bear are the major faunal property of this sanctuary. Food chain and natural dependency on each other are one of the major genetic indications of every species. Birds, four legged species and reptiles are also included in this behavior. Some fish species are also found in the ponds and nearby river. Black spotted turtle is also in the faunal list of this sanctuary.

How to Reach
This sanctuary is located at the distance of 45 kilometers from Nahan and well connected by routine bus services as well as tourist cabs. Route via Solan is easier and affordable to reach this sanctuary.
By rail reaching is expensive and time talking as nearest railway station is Shimla which is far located. By road access from Shimla is also expensive. Though, some buses of state transports are connected with the Sirmour. Kalka railway station will also be convenient as by road journey via Solan is easy and comfortable to reach.
Shimla or Chandigarh airports will be the nearest and convenient. Frequent road transports are available from Chandigarh airport located at a distance of 275 kilometers.
