Himachal Pradesh Daranghati
Daranghati sanctuary is a major attractive place and adds a feather in the beauty cap of Shimla. This sanctuary is located in the extreme North West portion of Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh. Famous quadruped of this sanctuary is the Musk Deer. This is the specialty of Musk Deer that very light and pleasant smell present in the habitat and surrounding areas of this species. To assist the visitor in visiting the sanctuary with proper rules and without disturbing and species, forest department of the state has posted some staff at Dafoda and Sarahan. This sanctuary is spread in a vast area of 16740 hectares. This sanctuary was established in 1974.
In this sanctuary various quadruped like Himalayan Black Bear, Brown Bear, Ghoral, Barking Deer, Musk Deer, Hyena, Snow Leopard, Himalayan Ibex, Blue Sheep, Flying Fox, and Flying Squirrel etc are naturally habited. Since long, no human interference has been made for want of additional residential area or wood cutting activities to illegal hunting. Reason being the wilds are peacefully habiting inside the sanctuary. This sanctuary is also rich in the reptiles. Special Black Cobra (Hilly area) with spots on head is found here. According to researches, this is much poisonous than Russell’s Wiper.
How to Reach
To reach this sanctuary, all the available means of transportation can be used.
Nearest airport to reach this sanctuary is Jubbalhatti which is located at 23 kilometers from Shimla city. Flights from Delhi can also be getting to reach at this airport.
This is the best and entertaining way. Nearest railways station is Shimla linked with narrow gauge line from Kalka to here. Toy train will reach a tourist from Kalka to Shimla in more than 5 hours.
For visitors from anywhere in India, nearest bus station is Shimla. From Shimla to Daranghati, state transport buses area available and except this, private taxies and tourist vans are also available at time. From Chandigarh, routine buses are also available directly to reach Daranghati sanctuary. National Highway – 22 via Solan, Barog, Taradevi and Jutog takes a visitor to Shimla and from here a 10 kilometers distance is required more to reach Daranghati.

This place is very beautiful and visit able in the first half of the day and located at 3 kilometers from Shimla.
This is an historical building constructed by British rulers as residence of Viceroy located on the route to Kufri at 4 Kilometers from main city.
This zoo is located on amazing way. Very tough and steep slopes, snaky roads lead to the zoo which is full of various animals and bird’s species. This is located at 5 kilometers distance from main city.
Sankat Mochan Mandir
A temple dedicated to lord Hanuman is located at 9 kilometers distance from Shimla on Kalka road is an attractive and religious place.
Jakhu Mandir is located on the highest hill top of Shimla and in the close vicinity of this temple; another famous and ancient temple of Baba Balak Nath Ji is also located. Way to this temple is from the Ridge ground of Shimla. Distance: 3 kilometers from main city.
The Mall, Scandal Point, Lakkad Bazzar, Chadwick Falls, Taradevi, Jutog are some other places of tourist interest in the close vicinity of main city. Kufri (The Snow Valley), Naldehra, Mashobara, Tatta Pani, Chail (The highest Cricket ground in world) are also located in the close outskirts of Shimla.
There are several luxury and budget hotels are available in Shimla. Paying guest facilities are also available for cheaper and homely room services. Except these, if a visitor wants to stay at Daranghati itself, a PWD rest house is available there and required an advance booking. Tented accommodation is also available at Daranghati and may be liked by adventure loving visitors.
