Himachal Pradesh Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary
The Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary has got its name from the Churdhar Peak. The sanctuary was formed in the year 1985 and is spread over an area of 66 sq. km. The Churdhar peak is as high as 3647 metres. The wildlife sanctuary is part of Sirmour in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh a state in India. There is also another place near the sanctuary that the visitors visit while there journey to the sanctuary and it is known as Lord ShirgulMaharaj.
The sanctuary forest is a temperate forest. During the summers and the early times of winters this area is considered as the exceptional place for the people who love to trek. The people who explore the area from the peak of Churdhar sanctuary get the view of bright, colored and nimble Monals in the forest that surround the area. The trek that goes along Nohra that is 18 km long, Tissri that is 11 km long and Pulbahal is 8 km long is rough and hard but the trekkers are amused while trekking.
The forests of the Churdhar sanctuary consist of Western Mixed coniferous, Kharsu Oak and the alpine pastures. The forest also has the Deodar, Oak and other many species in its vicinity.
The location of the Chudhar Wildlife sanctuary is very suitable for a relax trip as the forest natural habita has been still preserved. The people who are close to nature always will cherish their visit to this sanctuary.
The trees that are grown in the forest area of the sanctuary comprises of the belt of the Pine copses that have those oily leaves, the other is the Oak tree that is known for the robust wood, the other varieties include the Ash and Mulberry. These trees in the forest area are famous for creating the furniture. The forest that is famous for its durable and strong wood trees also houses the wide range of animals and other species. The visitors of the sanctuary can easily hear the tiger roar, and the mesmerizing sound of hyena.
The other animals that are housed in the Churdhar Wildlife sanctuary are wild buffalo, Snow Leopard, Ass and Reindeers. The Perennial River satiates the water requirements of the sanctuary. Both the natural scenic beauty and the wild life splendorous can be enjoyed on the visit to the sanctuary. This is considered as the paradise for the visitors.
The species that are part of this Churdhar sanctuary are Rhesus Macaque,Himalayan Black Bear,Musk Deer,Royle ‘s Pika ,Koklas Pheasant, Chestnut –tailed Minal, Bull finch, Grey-crested Tit,Common Langur ,, Red-headed Bullfinch,Leopard,Himalayan Green Finch, Wild Boar Indian Muntjac, Goral ,White-tailed Nuthatch,Indian Porcupine,Black –crested Tit,Himalayan Monal, Variegated Laughing thrush.
The sanctuary has multi-colored and lissome Monals spread all over the area in the sanctuary along with the nearby places.
Weather and Best Time to Visit
The climate in the area is pleasant during the summers and experience a cold and chilling winters. The best months in the summers are from April to June to visit the sanctuary and the months October and November are best during winters. The area receives rainfall of 1500mm. The temperature goes up to 20 degree Celsius and as low as 5 degree Celsius.
How to Reach
The nearest airport is Jubbarhattithat is at a distance of 23 km from Shimla.
The closest rail line is Shimla to Kalka. It is a narrow gauge line and the journey along this rail line is very pleasant and adventurous. The toy train runs on this rail line and has two types of coach one of them is the luxury cabin while the other are the normal coach.
Taxis or Local state transport buses can be hired to reach Churmur Wildlife sanctuaries. The buses are easily available from nearby famous cities.

A huge Lord Shiva effigy has been made on the top of Churu Peak that attracts the visitors.
The visitors should always follow the rules and regulations that have been abide by the department of forest.
