Gujarat Barda Wildlife Sanctuary
Barda wildlife sanctuary is located at 15 kilometers distance from Porbandar district in Gujarat state of India. Establishment of this sanctuary was done in the year of 1979. The expansion of Barda wildlife sanctuary is in 192 sqkm which is comparatively less than other sanctuaries of the state. Gir wildlife sanctuary is one of the largest sanctuaries in Gujarat. On the western direction from Porbandar district, this sanctuary is located. If one goes to Dwarka and Okha, he will have to take a turn between the places to reach this sanctuary.
Porbandar was not much popular and dense before three decades. Wild animals were used to wandering in open areas and there was not a big threat to the public as the density of population was not much like of today. But due to increased use of port, the popularity of the district increased and resulted in population. Human interference made wild species disturbed and in turn the natural habitat of the animals started decreasing. To save the precious wild property, this area was declared as wildlife sanctuary in 1979. Since declaration of sanctuary, the preservation activities started with pace and frequency.
In this sanctuary, various wild species like Tigers (rarely seen), 1 Asiatic Lion (which has been shifted to Sasan Gir – Devalia forest), Leopard, hyena, wild boar, wolf, jackal, bluebull etc are habited. At present no endangered wild species are habited in this sanctuary. As far as Tigers and Lions are concerned, no specie is seen in this area since last decade. Birds including a few species of migratory birds and Adjutant Stork, Spotted eagles, Crested Hawks, Kingfishers, Wood Cutter, and Ring necked Pigeon, Parrots and Sparrows are found in this sanctuary. Survival rate of all the species habited in this sanctuary is good as living conditions according to wildlife are better. Regeneration capacities in the animals have been increased because of independent and uninterrupted environment. One of the special specie of this sanctuary is Stripped Hyena. At present more than 313 Hyenas are living in this sanctuary.
Flora and Fauna
Floral property of the area is comparatively rich than other sanctuaries. Goard, Babul, Dhav, Jamun, Imli and Dhuldo trees are erected in the sanctuary in large numbers. Dense population of Rayan trees creates a shady environment in almost part of the sanctuary. This atmosphere is much liked by Hyenas.
As far as faunal property is concerned, this sanctuary also has richer level among various sanctuaries in Gujarat state. Sambhar, Chinkara, Hyena and Antelopes are found in this sanctuary in large numbers. This sanctuary is the home land from where first Asiatic Lion was migrated to Sasan Gir sanctuary in Junagadh. During 1979, state government started “Gir-Barda Project” just to preserve the typical Asiatic Lion but due to a sanctuary developed in nearby district for Lions, the lions from this sanctuary shifted there.
