Bihar Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary
Parasnath wildlife sanctuary is surrounded with lush greenery as the famous Parasnath Hills are just closer to this sanctuary. Parasnath hills are one of the best picturesque places in Jharkhand. These hills are located at 1371 Mtrs from MSL (mean Sea Level). This sanctuary has importance because of rich fauna and flora properties. This sanctuary is closer to the city and located at 16 kilometers distance. This is a good place for spending weekends and having adventures activities.
The name of this sanctuary has been derived from 23rd Jain Tirthankar, Lord Pashwanath, whose nirvana was done on this hill. Due to pronunciation and fast spelt, the name deformed and called as Parasnath. This wildlife sanctuary was established by the then, Bihar Government in 1971. Girdih district was considered the homeland of Tigers, Barking Deers, Lesser cats and leopards. This district was a contemporary of Ranthambhour sanctuary in Rajasthan. Tigers of this area are very close to the tigers of Sundarban in West Bengal. During 1992, when Project Tiger introduced into this sanctuary, the preservation activities to save this endangered species have taken place. Since then, the population of tigers has been increased and a total count of typical Asiatic Tigers of this area has been reached up 23. Later on bifurcation or re-organisation of states in India, also affected the maintenance of the sanctuary for a year but now-a-days conditions are better and the sanctuary is facing no more constraints.
In this area, Tigers, Panthers, Langurs, Sloth Bears, Sambhar, Neel Gai, Barking Deers, Monkey, Mongoose, Jungle Cat and Hyena etc are found in large numbers. Population of monkeys is the largest in entire sanctuary and this is only the wild species which maintains a continuous noise inside the sanctuary. Birds are not habited inside as no water source is located. Various dangerous reptiles are also found in this area. Great Indian Black Cobra (King Cobra), Pythons, Russell’s Wiper (Brown and long spotted), Monitor Lizard, Flying Lizard, Chameleons (Long Tailed), Scorpions and Karrait are found everywhere in the sanctuary.
How to Reach
This sanctuary can be accessed by Rail, Air and Road ways easily.
A small airstrip is available in the Girdih district on top of a hill. This is called Boro Aerodrome.
Girdih is the nearest railway station located at 23 kilometers from this sanctuary. Parasnath railway station is also on the same distance and well connected with major trains from all over the country. This station falls in eastern Railway Zone.
This sanctuary is having good connectivity through roads as various highways and approach roads are available in better condition till this site. GT Road is connected with this sanctuary through link road and state highways.
Around this sanctuary so many visiting places are based. A tourist has plenty of options to visit while making a trip to this sanctuary. Parasnath Hills are one of the best destinations around the sanctuary. This hill has the Jain temples dedicated to 23rd Tirthankar Parshvanath Ji. This temple is located in hillocks at the height of 4431ft. The construction of approach road to this temple was done during 1838. Its is said that Lord Parshvanath attained Nirvana at this hill top in the age of just 20.
This is a water reservoir located at 8 kilometers distance from Girdih district. This place is ideal for spending weekends with water related sports activities. Boating and water scooting facilities are available in this reservoir. Girdih is the nearest railway station to access this place.
In the high hills of Parasnath, this water fall is located. Usri river is a tributary to River Ganges and joins the same at further stage. This fall is situated at a distance of 14 kilometers from main town. Local transportation is available to reach at this place.
Except the above mentioned places Jharkhandi Dham, Madhuwan and Harihar Dham are also the famous places around this wildlife sanctuary where a visitor can also have an option to visit while coming to this sanctuary.
