Assam Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary
Sonai-Rupai wildlife sanctuary is well known for large population of Elephants and Indian Bison. This sanctuary is located in the Sonitpur district of Assam. The area occupied by this sanctuary is not much but the geographical conditions of the area makes it larger as the hilly and sloppy terrain makes the area tough for normal wandering of animals. This sanctuary is located at 60 kilometer distance from Bhalukpong town.
This sanctuary is larger than the nearby Pabha wildlife sanctuary. The region of this sanctuary starts and ends with Himalayan foothills. This sanctuary was established in 1991 when the Project Tiger introduced into the Assam state. Proposal of Project Tiger was reached in the state during 1990 and execution started in 1992. In the Sonitpur district, population of Tigers was in good condition. But after declaration of wildlife sanctuary, the preservation activities started in this area with pace.
In this wildlife sanctuary, Tigers, Lesser Cats, Elephants, Wild Boar, Barking Deers, Hog Deers are found in sufficient numbers. In other words it can be said that Elephants are dominating the sanctuary as their population has been found increased in faster ratio than other animals in last two decades. As far as bird species are concerned, Hornbills, Spotted Bill Pelican, White Winged Wooden Ducks are some of the important birds of this sanctuary. Some species of migratory birds can also be spotted here in the summers from Mongolia and Siberia. Normal Indian Karrait, Pythons and poisonous Russell’s Wiper are found in large numbers in this sanctuary. According to a statistics of forest department of the state, more than 7 species are dies of snake bite every year. In this sanctuary, typical brown and spotted Scorpions are found. It is believed that goddess Alka once cursed and spitted over the scorpion when a scorpion tried to bite the goddess. Since then the spotted skin of the scorpion is seen.
How to Reach
Salonibari is the nearest airport which is located at 10 kilometer distance from Tezpur. Tezpur is located at 52 kilometers from this sanctuary.
Rangapara is nearest railway station and located at 60 kilometers distance from here.
From Guwahati, Sonitpur and other cities of Assam, frequent road transport services are available. State government as well as private tour operators also provide bus and taxi service on affordable charges.

Best Season for Visit
Through the year visiting is open but best time to visit is November to April to avoid Monsoon related problems.
