Andhra Pradesh Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary
Rollapadu wild life sanctuary is one of the largest and most attractive wild life sanctuaries in Andhra Pradesh. This WLS is located in Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh state of India. 614 sqkm areas of Eastern Ghats is the homeland for the animals of this sanctuary. Rollapadu wildlife sanctuary is also famous for its vide variety of flora and fauna. Location of this forest is just 60 kilometers away from Kurnool district headquarters. Nandikotkuru village of the district is the exact location of this wildlife sanctuary.
Rollapadu wild life sanctuary is one of the biggest wild life sanctuaries in Andhra Pradesh. As a part of project tiger, the wild species of this sanctuary have also been protected. To preserve the decreasing strength of tigers in the country, various facilities and protections have been provided to the Tigers as well as other animals in this sanctuary. Some of the incidents of animals attack were happened in Nandikotkuru village due to unprotected environment. During 1973, officially the area surrounds the village Nandikotkuru was declared as Rollapadu Wild Life Sanctuary. The village Nandikotkuru was also provided special security arrangements from the dangerous wild animals like Tigers, Sloth Bears and Hyenas. This forest area is also famous for large scorpions.
A bird sanctuary is also located at this place which is natural habitat of various bird species like Black Buck, Cranes, Indian Bustard, Mynas, Sparrows and Swans. A small pond is also located inside the sanctuary which always full of water and a paradise for migratory birds. During summer season, large number of bird species can be seen in this sanctuary. Bird sanctuary is also the part of this wild life sanctuary. A typical endangered bird species namely ‘Great Indian Bustard’ is major attraction of this forest. In this sanctuary, various bushes and holes are found, which are ideal natural habitats for different kind of birds and animals. Black Indian Cobra and Great Indian Bustard are some of the main endangered species in this sanctuary which need close protection and preservation.
Weather and Best Time to Visit
Almost climate of this area is hot as entire Andhra Pradesh state is in the hot zone. Monsoon season is slightly relaxing in this sanctuary but still October to February is the best time to see this sanctuary.
How to Reach
Nandikotkuru is easily accessible by all means of transportation available.
By air access is possible for this place as Hyderabad is the nearest airport and located at 91 kilometers distance from here.
Kurnool railway station is the nearest railway station and located at the distance of 60 kilometers. From railway station, frequent road services are available to reach this wild life sanctuary.
From Kurnool Bus station, APSRTC operates its bus service regularly to this place. A large number of tourists daily visit this forest and apart from APSRTC, various private taxies and tourist cabs are also in service from Kurnool. These vehicles are available on affordable charges at every time.
Flora and Fauna
Rollapadu wild life sanctuary has a vast panorama of flora and fauna. Bio diversity of the nearby are is depend on the floral properties of this wild life sanctuary. In the surrounding areas of this wild life sanctuary 16 different islands and more than 30 villages are based on the bio actions of this place. Various trees species like Manilkara, Hexandra, Strychnos, Ficus Tiela, Sepiata, and Uberifolium are found in this area. Floral richness of this sanctuary is one of the most valuable amenities to various species as well as mankind attached to this forest too.
Flamingo is the important bird species of this sanctuary. Grey Hones, Cormorants, Pelicans, White Lbis, Spoon Bills, Egrets are some other bird species are also habited in this sanctuary. Dangerous and endangered reptiles like, Indian Python, Great Indian Cobra, Spectacled Cobra and Russell Wiper are also found in this sanctuary at everywhere. Monitor Lizards, Chameleons, Large Scorpions are examples of fauna property found in Rollapadu wild life sanctuary. Danger is spread in this sanctuary but adventure and attraction invites visitors time and again.
