Andhra Pradesh Papikonda Wildlife Sanctuary
Papikonda WLS is presently one of the most visited sanctuaries in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. Exact location of this wildlife sanctuary is 50 kilometers away from Rajamundary. Nature is untouched and undisturbed here as human interference has introduced artificiality in the jungle environment. This wildlife sanctuary was established in 1978 and official efforts were initiated in full pace to save the natural environment of the wild species. Area of this sanctuary is spread over in 591 sqkm. Self generating capacity and life cycling is one of the most important feature of this wildlife sanctuary.
Papikonda wild life sanctuary was conceptualised in 1976 when fast urbanization disturbed the natural environment. Residential need, agricultural needs of fast growing population always shortened the natural habitat of the wild species. Reason being various wild animals become man eater. The population of nearby areas suffered itself as a result of disturbing the animals. To get rid of these problems, this wild area declared a wild life sanctuary in 1978 and efforts to preserve the species begun. Forest department, ministry of forest, environment board all put in their efforts to make the sanctuary free from human interference. Decreasing population of tigers and other species preserved through natural and unnatural means and presently the lost population of these species has reached upto the mark. It is believed that this forest was existing in mythological period and during Ramayana, this area was known as Kishikindha.

Papikonda wild life sanctuary is accessible through all the possible means.
By air access to this sanctuary is also possible but visitors will have to de-board at Hyderabad only. From Hyderabad, various road transports are available to this place.
Rajamundary is the nearest railway station to this place which is located at 50 kilometers distance from the sanctuary.
Rajamundary is the main bus station for this place and frequent taxi, cabs and bus services are available to this place. APSRTC also operating various special buses to this place as Papikonda is the major tourist attraction in this area.
This sanctuary is the natural habitat of the jungle king, the Tiger. More than five species of tigers are found here. Tigers of this forest are known as one of the biggest Tiger specie all over the world. Royal Bengal Tiger is a bit larger than theTiger found in this sanctuary. Hyena, Jackal, Wilder Beast and Antelopes are naturally habited here. Accept wild animals, some reptiles of dangerous nature are also found here. King Cobra and Black Karrait snakes are major poisonous reptiles of this wild life sanctuary. In April 2004, a king Cobra was caught in the nearby village of this sanctuary was told the largest Cobra ever found in the World. Age of that Cobra was also determined 133 years. This fact shows the danger and importance of this sanctuary. There is a pond inside the sanctuary. In the water, Muggers, water snakes and other crocodile species are also found. During monsoon, the water fills in shallow areas of the sanctuary and migratory birds like Cranes, Spotted Ducks, Sparrows and Swans are seen here. These migratory birds come here in the month of July and move in September every year. Trees of various verities full of green leaves are found in this forest. Tominalias, Tomentosa Tectona grandis, Albizzia including other indigenous verities of trees are erected in this sanctuary everywhere. A hill namely Rekapalle is another attraction in this sanctuary as scenic beauty of the hills attracts various species of bear towards this forest from other places. For visiting in the forest, local jeeps and Safari Jeeps are available at the sanctuary site. People may prefer to stay in Rajamundary for a trip to this wild life sanctuary. Some other hotels and resorts are available in Kannapuram and Maredumilli towns.
