Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary is also termed as elephant reserve and is located in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. The Wildlife sanctuary is a house of famous Asian Elephants that moved from many adjoining areas around 200 years back. In the years from 1983 to 1986 the elephants inlarge number moved from Anekal-Hosur forests in Tamil Nadu and the Bannerghatta forests in Karnataka to move to other various locations in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Before this mobility Andhra Pradesh does not had any elephants. With this mobility of elephants from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to Andhra Pradesh the government in Andhra Pradesh planned to set up a sanctuary in the year 1990.The Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary is the house of total around 72 elephants.Other than the elephants the Yellow-throated Bulbul who is on the risk ofeloping can also be found in the wildlife sanctuary. The other variety of numerous birds from the Eastern Ghats flew down to the sanctuary and to name the few are Rosy Pelicans,Cockatiels, Painted Storks and Grey Pelicans. Few of the other animal species that can be found in the Kaundinya wildlife sanctuary are Panthers, Sambar,Wild Bear, Jackal, Starred Tortoise, Sloth Bear, Cheetal, Porcupine, JungleCat, Jungle Fowl and Slender Loris.
The surroundings of wildlife sanctuary are of that of thedry deciduous forests of Southern tropical type. The chief flora that surroundsthe sanctuary is formed by the FicusAcacias, Lagerstroemia, and Bamboo. The other flowers that arepart of sanctuary are Reetha, Amla and Shikakai.
The Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary is at the distance ofaround 87 km from the Horsley Hills. The wildlife sanctuary also has the two beautiful rivers flowing in its vicinity. The two rivers are Kaigal and Kaundinya.
The other animals that are housed in the sanctuary are common langur, rhesus monkeys and bonnet monkey. Mandrill and Olive baboon canalso be spotted in the vicinity of the sanctuary. Three kinds of Indian crocodile can also be found here.
The Kaundinya wildlife sanctuary is surrounded by deepgorges and high mountains. They sanctuary is formed with the dry deciduous forests and the forests have pools and meres that are formed by the two riversKaundinya and Kaigal in the vicinity of sanctuary. The location of thesanctuary is such that it starts from the ends of Deccan Plateau and it goes tothe prairies of Tamil Nadu thus helping in forming the ghats and valleys. Themajor threats to the sanctuary are from the mankind. The major threat is thecollection of wood that is done illegally. Lack of feedstuff is another reasonfor the threat of forest.
Weather and Best Time to Visit
The time that is considered pleasant for visiting KaundinyaWildlife Sanctuary is from October to April. During these months the weather ofthis area is very pleasant. The temperatures during the summer’s ranges from40-45 degree Celsius while it goes down to 15-20 degrees Celsius duringwinters.
In the winters the visitors can enjoy by spending their timealong the lake side and viewing various birds flocks over the lake.
The Kaundinya wildlife sanctuary gets open early the morning and is open till almost late evening.

There are two airports near to Horsley Hill; these are theBangalore and Tirupati airports which are at the distance of around 165 km and160 km respectively. Kaundinya Wildlife sanctuary is at a distance of around 87 kms from Horsley Hill. One can hirelocal taxis to reach there.
The closest rail line is Madanapalle Road. It is around 100kms from the sanctuary. The local transport is easily available from railwaystation to reach the Kaundinya wildlife sanctuary.
Taxis or Local state transport buses can be hired to reachKaundinya Wildlife sanctuaries. The buses are easily available from Madanapalleand Tirupati.
