Modak
Brief Description
Modak is one the most famous sweet dish of Maharashtra that is made during ganapati festivals. It is delightful and mouthwatering dish. Modak is a favorite food of lord ganesha’s. Modak is easy to make by following this recipe.
Preparation Minutes – 15 Cook Time Minutes – 30 Serves 4 Ingredients For Modak

For The Filling
- Freshly grated coconut - 2 cups
- Sugar or grated jaggery (gur) - 1 cup
- Roasted poppy seeds (khus-khus) - 1 tsp
- Cardamom powder - 3 to 4
- Rice flour (chawal ka atta) - 1 tsp
For The Covering
- Rice flour (chawal ka atta) - 1 cup
- Water - 1 cup
- Ghee - 1 tsp
- Oil - 1/2 tsp
- Salt - a pinch
How to make Modak
For the filling
- In a pan, Heat the sugar and coconut on average heat. Keep stirring it continuously.
- Now add the khas-khas, rice flour and cardamom powder. And heat it for few more minutes. Set aside to cool completely.
For the covering
- Boil the water in a pan, add the oil, rice flour, ghee and salt, Blend nicely and heat it for some more time. Keep stirring properly.
- Switch off the gas and set it aside.
- To make soft dough, move it on a flat tray and mix well.
How to proceed
- Cut it into small pieces and roll out each pieces informing of circle. Then make a small cup with the help of your hands.
- Taking little coconut stuffing into this cup shaped dough.
- Now taking side direct informing a peak with greasy hands.
- Similarly make all modak’s.
- Take a flat round plate with cotton cloth and put all the modak’s onto it.
- Put the sieve in a steamboat with lid for few minutes.
- Ready to enjoy eating and serve warm.

Some Useful Tips
- Always served fresh modak’s with ghee on the top.
- You can use the milk in the water; it helps modak retain their white coor.
- You can fill the nuts as per your taste.
