Dehradun down is the headquarters of the Dehradun district. This city is also the provisional capital of Uttaranchal state since its inception in the ear 2000. There are 6 tehsils, 6 blocks for assimilated community development, a total of 17 cities with interspersed 764 villages with population and 18 without any population.

During the Gurkha war of 1814-16, the British seized the region after agreeing on it as a war spoil from maharaja of Tehri-Garhwal. It was merged with Saharanpur district under the British rule. Some of the important towns in the district are those of Rishikesh, Landour, Mussoorie and Chakrata. River Ganges bounds the district in the east, while Yamuna flows in the west of the district. The south and southeast is bound by Terai and Shivalik ranges and great Himalayan ranges are present in the northwest.

Various aspects of Dehradun which are famous include its resources found in nature, prestigious education institutes such as Forest Research Institute, Indian Military Academy, etc. Besides, many boarding and day schools also, are reputed in the entire country. Many famous publishing houses are also quite well known. National level government organisations such as Survey of India, Oil and Natural Gas Committee and Indian Institute of Petroleum are also found in Dehradun.
Due to the location of Dehradun in the foothills of Himalayas, the Ganges towards east and Yamuna in west carve a topography of a valley known as Doon valley. The valley provides the picturesque scenery and landscape and the pleasant climate in the region. Nearby destination of touristic importance like Mussoorie, Auli, Nainital, Haridwar as well as Rishikesh are closeby and also the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit.
