Almora is one of the districts of Uttarakhand in the Kumaon division and is well known for its variety of cultural history, heritage, wildlife, handicrafts and cuisine.
Before being established as a separate town, the ancient city of Almora was under the rule of Katyuri king Baichaldeo. A major part of the region was donated to Sri Chand Tiwari, a Gujrati Brahmin. Later on in 1568, Almora, being centrally located, was officially established during the setting up of the Chand kingdom in Baramandal.
Almora town is founded over a ridge of mountain that was horse saddle shape with the eastern part of the ridge known as Talifat and the Western half known as Selifat. At the top of the mountain, where the two ridges end, is the market place of Almora.

From Almora, the nearest airport is Pantnagar (Nainital) which is about 127 kms away, and the nearest railway station is at Ramnagar, 90 kms from the town, which is also the place from where direct trains to Delhi, Agra and Lucknow are available. Road connectivity to various important regions is good from the town of Almora.
