Sonbhadra is the second biggest district amongst all the districts of Uttar Pradesh. The district is located on the extreme southeastern part of the state with its district headquarters being Robertsganj.

Sonbhadra district is situated in the southeast of the Vindhyachal mountain range. In the district, a reservoir named Gobind Ballabh Pant Sagar, has been built up at Rihand. A portion of the dam falls in this district while the rest is in Madhya Pradesh. The chief rivers that flow through the district are Rihand and Son.

Sonbhadra covers a complete area of about 6,788 kilometers square. This district has ecological, cultural and historical resemblances along with the region of Bagelkhand. The big power projects like NTPC Rihand as well as Obra are set in this place. The most important town of Sonbhadra district is Robertsganj. The city situated about hundred kilometers from Varanasi city, is an intellectual centre of the Vedic civilization and also the district headquarter.
