Pilibhit is the north-eastern most district of Bareilly division. It was once known as Hafizabad. Pilibhit was known as the land of flutes, for making and exporting roughly 95 per cent of India's flutes.

History:

Area of Pilibhit was ruled by Chhinda dynasty during 10th century. Pilibhit was ruled by an ancient king named Mayurdhwaj or Moredhwaj or King Venu according to locals. The city Pilibhit was an administrative unit during the Mughal era. Pilibhit was invaded by the Marathas in 1772 AD.

Geography:

Longitude is 78 degree east, latitude 28 degree north and height 172 meters above the sea level. The area is around 47 sq km. The area has diverse features, and topographically may be divided into several distinct tracts.

Culture:

• Architecture of the city is phenomenal which includes Jama Masjid of Pilibhit, Sri Gauri Shankar Temple and Sri Radha Krishna Temple, Raja Ji ki Kothi, Ghanta Ghar, etc.
• Embroidery craft is the main source of employment. This embroidery is based on Lucknow's famous Zardozi work. Some of the neighboring Tharu tribes make their livelihood by selling terracotta work.  Pilibhit has a lot of wood-based art and craft industries.
• Some of the folk dances are: Qawwali, Ramlila, Raslila, Bhangra, Gidda, etc.
