Meerut is a district of the state of Uttar Pradesh in north India with its district headquarters situated in the town of Meerut. Among the division of Meerut lies the Meerut district.

The district has received its name from the headquarter city. According to Hindu beliefs it is stated that Ravana’s father-in-law, Maya, had built this city. The city got the name from her and was known as Maidant-ka-Khera. There is another tale which states that Maya, an eminent architecture received this piece of land from king Yudhishther. The place was named as Mayrashtra and later abbreviated to Meerut. Located between Yamuna and Ganga and situated very near to the capital of India, this district has been a hub for many different activities during the period of history.

The district of Meerut covers an area of 2,522 kilometer square. Meerut is surrounded by Baghpat to the east, Bulandshahr to the south and Muzaffarnagar to the north. The boundary on the east is formed by the river Ganges which separates the district from Moradabad and Bijnor.
