Jaunpur district falls under the state of Uttar Pradesh. The district headquarters is located at Jaunpur. The district falls in the Varanasi Division. The district of Jaunpur has six tehsils which are Kerakat, Mariyahu, Jaunpur, Machhalishahr, Badlapur and Shahganj. The district consists of ten Vidhan Sabha constituencies.

The district covers an area of four thousand and thirty eight square kilometers. The Lok Sabha constituencies of the district are located at Machhlishahr and Jaunpur. In the fourteenth century, in fond memory of Sultan Muhammad, Firoz Tuglak established the town. Jauna Khan was the original name of Sultan Muhammad. The city was named Jaunpur after him. In 1394 AD, Malik Sarvar established the Sharky Empire. A number of mosques were constructed during this period. The economy of the district of Jaunpur is mostly dependent on agriculture.
