The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and the temple is located in the village of Samta that is part of West Bengal a state in India. The temple is named as “GopalerMondir” by the locale that clearly indicates that temple is worshipped got Lord Krishna also known as Gopala.
The temple complex is very large and the material used in the construction is terracotta. The temple has been constructed in the year 1651 AD. The pugilist Mukundaprasad Roy Choudhury is considered to be the originator of the temple. This pugilist belonged to the family of Roy Zamindars who was the ruler of Samta village.
The idols of the Lord and deity on the temple have been carved out of shining black colored stone and the height of the idol is one and half feet high.
One of the major festivals celebrated in temple is Janamashtmi. The other festival celebrated are Holi and on the day of Purnima is celebrated each year is the DolYatra.
Architecture
The entrance of the temple is marked by three archways that are facing in the southern direction. There are two more entrances that lead to the temple from the western and eastern direction.
The height of the temple goes to 40 feet. When the temple was built, River Rupnarayan flowed in its vicinity but today the river has changed its passage. This temple in Bengal has a large roof that has eight slopes and hence is also referred as atchala. The temple is in dilapidated condition.
