Uttaranchal Nag Raja Temple
Sikanda homes which are amidst Himalayan hill region, particularly in the areas of Garhwal and Kumaon, have worship sessions during the festival of Diwali devoted to one God, who is Nag Raja. These tribal village people worship particularly six main household Gods, namely Nar Singh, Manglia, Gauril, Agornath, Dhagbairuand Nag Raja. Among the village folks Nag Raja is the deity for Rajputs, while other deities are worshiped by Brahmins or Bajgis and Blacksmith community people also.
Sem Mukhem temple in the interior part of Tehri district is dedicated to Nag Raja, held in high esteem among tribal people of the location, to which place one can easily trek a 7 km distance. Alternatively, mountain roads here are motor-able.
Tehri Garhwal district is spread in the snow clad Himalayan hills of Thalaiya Sagar, which form part of Jonli and the Gangotri region at the foothills near Rishikesh. Bhagirathi River runs through this place dividing the area into two, and other rivers Bhilangna, Alaknanda, Ganga and Yamuna border this location.
History
Tehri Garhwal got its name Tehri from the term ‘Trihari’ which implies purification of sins committed out of Manas, Vach and Karmana, which mean sins that arose out of thoughts of mind, words spoken and acts done, which every human being is subjected to, during the life time. The old town Tehri is immersed in water today, however the new town Tehri is situated 1550 to 1950 mtrs above the sea level. The other part of the name Garhwal indicates the fort guarding this town those days.
This is considered a sacred hill station out of the belief that Lord Brahma has had his meditations done sitting in this spot, and there are locations called Muni Ki Reti and Tapovan which were the abode of ancient seers.
This place was ruled by Kanakpal, who married the daughter of Kingh Bhanu Pratap and held his reign for about 915 year’s upto 1803AD.
How To Reach
Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport to reach Tehri Garhwal, which is at a distance of 91 km, the nearest Railway Station being Rishikesh, which is well connected with major Rail points in India. Good roadway is there to reach this place, buses plying from all important stations of Uttrakhand and also from ISBT Kashmere Gate Delhi.
Important Shrines
There are a few shrines around Tehri Garhwal district, which include
- Buda Kedar Temple which is situated at the meeting point of Bal Ganga River and Dharam Ganga River, in about 59 km distance from Tehri. Legends convey that Duryodhana of Mahabharat performed rituals here and Pandavas had encountered rishi Balkhily at Brigu Parbat here.
- DevPrayag town situated at the meeting point of rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi, which is about 87 km from Narendernagar, where there is a Raghunathji temple which is said to be 10 thousand years old and which place is given the name of Deosharma, who practiced penance here. There are two sacred steams called Brahma Kund and VashistaKund visited by large number of pilgrims.
- Chandrabadani Temple at Chandrabadani is a well-known temple lying at the top of the mountain in about 10 km north of KandiKhal.
Attraction
Tourists have many places of tourism interest to visit around Tehri Garhwal District, which are
- Khatling Glacier is a spot one can reach by trekking from Ghuttu, about 62 kms from Tehri, which is the most spectacular spot in the region. The other spots such as Reeh, Gangi, Kalyani and Bhomakgufa are equally interesting ones.
- Narendra Nagar is a place situated 14kms from Muni-ki-Reti at an elevated place of 1,129 metres which was the capital of the erstwhile king of Garhwal.
- Chamba is another township which is 60 kms away from Mussoourie and 48 kms distance from Narendra Nagar on the way to Gangotri and this spot is at an altitude of 1676 metres, offering a panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayas amidst the serene Bhagirathi valley.
- Dhanolti, is another location amidst dense forests of Deodar, Rhododendron and Oak, having an atmosphere of perfect peace and tranquility, which is an excellent holiday retreat.
- Kunjapuri is a peak having an altitude of 1,676 metres approximately, commanding a beautiful view of the snow filled Himalayas and the Bhagirathi Valley.
- Surkanda Peak is another spot lying at a height of 2,750 metres in the western side of tehsil Tehri, where the famous temple of Surkanda Devi is located, which is about 8 kms distance from Dhanolti.
- Nagtibba is the location for those who are interested in trekking and adventure, which would offer them wonderful time.
- Kempty fall which is in about 15 Kms. from Mussoourie on the Yamunotri road lying in an altitude of 1215 mts.is the biggest and prettiest water fall located here.
