Uttar Pradesh Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple Varanasi
Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and located in the city itself. Adjacent to this temple, famous temples of Lord Vishwanath and Durga are also established. This temple was constructed during 1900 by the efforts of famous freedom fighter Pt. M.M. Malviya. It is a general belief in public that the location of this temple is the exact place where the vision of lord Hanuman was experienced by great poet Goswami Tulasidas. This is the faith of devotees to get the blessings of lord Hanuman on every Tuesday and Saturday. According to some astrologers, the nail effects are swiped off from the lives if worship of Lord Hanuman done with devotion. In 2006, this temple faced a vast terrorist attack and may of the devotees have lost their lives. Though, from very next day the activities were started as usual. To prevent further such attacks, a police post has been established inside the temple premises. A foundation was established in 1982 by the priest of this temple named, Veer Bhadra Mishra to protect the temple and to clean the River Ganga. Mr. VB Mishra was the HOD of Civil Engineering Deptt. Of BHU. He was a winner of award from UNESCO and author of various books on environment. His foundation is working for the betterment of the temple and as well as cleaning of Ganga from last 25 years.
Architecture
The architecture of this temple is simple and has the traditional north Indian style of temple making. Entrance of this temple is double storied. Huge and wide entrance gate is another feature of the architectural planning of the temple. Wide gate is having terrace on both the floors of entrance. Sides of the gate have arches and a dome type semicircular decoration. The base of the temple has 3 ft height from the natural earth level. Inside the temple, there is a corridor which is conical and roofed with corrugated galvanized iron sheets. Though, this is a temporary arrangement but also used to perform various religious activities too. Approach road is another facility to take devotees to this temple. Behind the temple, there is parking facility is provisioned for two wheelers. Upper storey of the entrance gate has six windows out of which four are front facing while other two are constructed on both sides. Two bud shaped domes have been erected on both the corners of upper storey. Middle portion of the gate has Jali work and two peacocks facing each other and mounted on a specially built Mukut. Lighting arrangement of this temple is better.
Festivals
As the temple is dedicated to lord hanumanji, it is obvious that hanuman Jayanti is the major festival. On all the Tuesdays of June each year, a huge gathering across the country assembles here to celebrate hanuman Jayanti.
Except this, Sankat Mochan sangeet samaroh is also organised every year . This tradition is being followed since 88 years. In this mahotsav, various arts of Indian classical music and dance are displayed here. Different languages and cultures display their diversity and the unity if Indian culture in this temple every year.
