Uttar Pradesh Alopi Devi Temple Allahabad
This temple is located in very close vicinity of Sangam of three sacred river of India, Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. The place is also known as Triveni. At this place, historical Kumbh Mela is organised at every 12 yrs. This temple is not dedicated to any particular deity as no idol of any goddess is kept inside. A “Doli’ is kept there and devotees worship it with full faith and devotion. As the word Alopi is concerned, it carries the meaning of Non visible. It is believed that after the death of Sati, Lord Shiva started wandering in sky carrying the body of sati on her back. Lord Vishnu saw it and felt to get rid of Lord Shiva from the grief of death of consort as well as her weight; he threw his Chakra and cut the body of Sati into 52 pieces. Lord Shiva was flying and body pieces of the Sati were falling on earth. Where ever the parts touched the land, that place called as Shakti Peeth. It is believed that last ever part of the body of sati fell at this place and disappeared (Alopi). According to another story, the place was covered with dense forestry in earlier time. The area was also dominated by robbers. Once a marriage party was returning to their home and a group of robbers killed the marriage party members and looted all their riches. When they wanted to capture the “Doli” of bride in greed of Jewelry, they saw there was no bride. Suddenly the bride was disappeared or become “Alopi”. This fact is just a fairy tale and doesn’t have any logical evidence. People started worshipping the Doli after preparing a temple. It is not evident from any point of history as to why these worshipping started and since when, but are continue till date.
