Significance Of The Temple
As per a legend, it is believed that, Lord Shiva said to his wife Paravati that he wished to take resort at Bhubaneswar rather than Benaras. She went there disguised as a cowherd woman to have a look at that place. There two demons Kriti and Vasa expressed their desire to marry her. She asked them to carry her on their shoulders and when they did so, she crushed them to death. Then Lord Shiva created ‘Bindusagar’ (meaning a drop of ocean) lake to quench the thirst of his exhausted wife. Having rested there, he took abode as Lingaraj.
Attractions
The ‘Bindusagar’ tank is filled by an underground river that originates from the temple. This water is believed to have healing powers and so pilgrims take a dip in this sacred water.
