It is part of the 34 temples and monasteries of Ellora caves spreading across 2 km. History and Architecture
Construction of the building is believed to be started in the mid 8th century under the command of King Krishna I (757-775), Rashtrakuta dynasty. Estimates point out that about 400,000 tons of stones were used for over centuries for the construction of this gigantic building. Ancient Chisel marks found by the archaeologists on the building walls led to the conclusion that the temple was carved using three types of chisels. Different carved Panels all over the temple depict various tales from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Kailash temple is also noted for its carvers beginning from the topside of the original rock, and excavated towards downside. All carvings are finished in different levels. A U-shaped courtyard can be accessed after passing through a two storied gateway. A three storied columned arcade edges the courtyard.
