It is evident from religious history that daughter of Daksha named Dakshayini wanted to marry Lord Shiva. But her father, Daksha did not like this match. He did not given any honor to Shiva and neglected him. But Dakshayini anyhow managed to marry Shiva. On this her father broke relations with his daughter and Shiva. One day during a ceremony, when Shiva was not present, Daksha insulted him a lot in front of a large gathering. Due to insult of her husband, Dakshayini committed suicide. When Shiva knew the matter he started killing of the courtiers/guests present their and Killed Daksha. Shiva carried the body of late Sati on her back. Lord Vishnu saw that Shiva is going incautious due to wandering with the load of Sati; he made the 51 pieces of the body to give relief to Lord Shiva. During this process, the necklace Sati had, fell and touched this part of earth. In local language Sati is called as Mai, the mother and the neck lace is called Har in Hindi language. Finally this place was called Mai+Har. Later according to pronunciation, the word transformed to Maihar.
Kachwaha clan Rajputs ruled this place over a long period. During their reign the temple was expanded and route was modified. Trikuta hill was tough to access during that time. Wild animals and robbers were active in the way. King of the area ensured the protection of devotees to the temple and abolished all the fear of the route.
