Madhya Pradesh Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Ujjain
The temple is devoted to its presiding deity, lord Shiva. This ancient Hindu worship place is located near Lake of Rudra Sagar. According to the Hindu mythology, the presiding deity in the temple, the Lingam is said to be sacred Swayambhu. The literally meaning of Swayambhu is self installed. Mahashivratri is the most celebrated festival in the location and during the festival visitors or devotees all around the state gather here to have Darshan of Bhagwana Shiva.
History
It is a known fact that there is no proper written evidence of its construction yet it is believed that it was built centuries ago. According to the Indian history, this sacred Hindu worship place was completely destroyed by king Shas-ud-deen-iltumish in the year of 1234-5. However, the current temple was constructed by king of Scindias, Srimant Ranojirao Shinde in the year of 1736 AD. After that the management and developments of the temple was carried by Shreenatha Mahad or Mahadji who was also called Madhavirao Shindeji and queen Bayzabai Raje during 1730 to 1863.
However, during the rule of King Shrimant Juyaajirao Shinde, the temple was renovated and developed greatly. But after independence of the country, a trust was established to maintain the temple. Presently the sacred Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is managed by government appointed collector. Mahashivratri is the main festival in the area and during the festival visitors or devotees from all over the country gathers here to have sacred Darshan of Bhagwana Shiva. It is said, during Mahashivratri, if devotee worship lord Shiva to fulfil his wish then he/she will be granted his/her wish.
How to Reach
By Air
Indore airport is the nearest airport that connects Ujjain to all other major cities of the country. Hence, visitors or devotees can get direct flights to Indore from all major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. So, from airport visitors can easily get local transport to reach at the temple.
By Rail
Ujjain junior railway station is the nearest railway station.
By Road
District Ujjain is well connected to other major cities or towns of the state by roads. Hence visitors or pilgrims can easily get road-transportation to reach at the temple.
Weather and Time to Visit
Ujjain has tropical climate conditions. It means during summers temperature rises to 44 degree Celsius while in winters it dropping down to 13 degree Celsius. However, monsoons usually occur in the month of July and offer good rainfall. So the best time to visit at Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is from the months of October to March. However, followers of Lord Shiva can also visit here during the festival of Mahashivratri.
