Kerala Vethalan Kavu Mahadeva Temple
The renowned Vethalan Kavu Mahadeva temple is situated close to town Kayakulam. This sacred Hindu worship place is considered among the rarest worship places on the earth. The main deity of the temple Lord Shiva or Mahadeva is worshiped here as Vethala. The temple is only 3 km distance from renowned Oachira Parabrahma Mandir or temple. During the festival of Mahashivratri, a festival dedicated to Lord Shiva or Mahadeva, visitors or pilgrims from all over the neighboring towns or cities gather here to have Darshan and blessings of God.
History
Vethalan Kavu Mahadeva temple was constructed during the 14th of century by a local ruler. According to a popular folklore, the area wherein present Vethalan Kavu Mahadeva temple is situated used to be a very horrible place. It is said, once a sage called Balamukhi visited the area and decided to worshiped lord Shiva at the place. He worshiped lord Mahadeva or Shiva greatly. As per the Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva is known for granting incredible boons. Thus, sage performed amazing rituals to please Lord Shiva. Finally, Lord Shiva appeared and granted him ultimate salvation. However, there is another popular legend regarding the origin of this sacred Shiva temple. It is said that a local ruler called Veerbhadra swamy who was also a great devotee of lord Shiva. Once, king became ill with unknown mysterious physical problems. His spiritual advisers suggested him to build a Shiva temple. Thus king constructed a Mahadeva temple and surprisingly he was cured.
Architecture
It is a known fact that Indian temples are basically famous for its architecture. The sacred Vethalan Kavu Mahadeva temple is also renowned for its unique architecture. The architecture of this sacred Hindu worship place is a fine example of blend architecture of Dravadian and south Indian. The temple structure has one basement. However, it is said that no one can reach down to mysterious basement as it is guarded by snakes. Local inhabitants claim that basement in the temple has incredible treasure. Only the main priest of the temple is able to access to the basement of the temple. However, the exterior portion of the temple resembles the olden style of architecture which is very common in the entire temple in south India. The centre area or hall of the temple is reserved for the sacred idols of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati. Moreover, in the middle of the temple, devotees can also see the idol of Nandi (a sacred cow of Lord Shiva).
