Kerala Sreekanteswaram Shiva Temple
Sreekanteswaram Siva Temple is one of the famous temples in Trivandrum district. Another temple is the city is also of same name and located at a walking distance from this temple. In Trivandrum city, just closed to over bridge, the temple is located. But in the Sreekanteswaram Siva temple, main deities are Lord Shiva and Lord Mahavishnu. Religious myth is related with this temple that a maid who used to keep the temple premises clean has once tried to lift her broom and the cleaning pot from her hut. But both the article becomes too heavy to be lifted by the maid. Inspite of best efforts, she could not succeed in attempts. Then she started using a stone to break the pot but in this process she saw that pot was bleeding. She amazed on this and matter gave to the local king. King saw himself and the pot were seen as Shivling. Later king constructed a temple at this spot and this is the today’s Sreekanteswaram Siva Temple. The temple is nearly 300 years old.
Architecture
This is a simply designed temple of the category of Hutted Temples. High sheds with sloppy roves are based on round pillars looks like a rest house. Entrance has a shed supported with six pillars and Garbhagriha is placed in crossed angle with wider corridor and supported on pillars. All the pillars are of round shape without any type of carving. No side walls existing as this is “Open heart” type construction. This is purely a European architectural design.
Festivals
In this temple Thiruvathira Mahotsawam is celebrated with huge gathering every year in the month of March and April. Mahashivaratri is main festival of this temple. 5th day of the festival is the day of Lord Shiva’s procession on Nandi which is made of Silver.
