Kerala Mahadeva Temple
Chengannur Taluk is famous for its Hindu temples and a renowned Mahadeva temple is among one of them. This ancient temple is famous for its miracles and supernatural powers. The area wherein this sacred Hindu worship place is located belongs to southern part of Kerala division. It is situated only 6 km distance from Taluk Chengannur. The temple is famous for its self originated Shiva lingam.
History
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva is considered as an Adi-Shakti or fundamental source of energy. There are various Shiva temples in the state but the Mahadeva temple of Venmoney is different from all other temples. It is a known fact that Lord Shiva is also known as Lord Mahadeva. However, there is no proper history available regarding the origin or construction of this sacred Hindu temple yet it is said the temple was constructed by Dravadian people during the 11th to 13th of centuries. The sculptures on the stone pillars of the temple also depict the importance of this holy place. According to a local folklore, the area wherein current Mahadeva temple is located used to be a forbidden area. Once, a saint called Raja swamy visited the place and decided to perform his penance at this place. He worshiped Lord Shiva day and night. Hence, seeing his devotion, Lord Shiva granted him the ultimate salvation and instructed to build a magnificent Shiva temple.
Architecture
Mahadeva temple is a fine example of Dravidian kind of architecture. The temple structure is divided into two main sections. One is called Mahamandapa and second one is called Mandapa. Inside the Mahamandapa, devotees can see the idol of Lord Shiva. The stone-made Shiva lingam is another important attraction of Mahamandapa. While inside the Mandapa, devotees can see the various idols of Hindu gods and Goddess such as Lord Ramanujam, Lord Krishan, Lord Ganapathy or son of Lord Shiva etc. the temple also has a large lawn and during the festival of Mashivratri, a festival devoted to Lord Shiva, a special Puja or rituals perform in the lawn. At that time, the temple is decorated with lights and flowers and devotees from all over the neighboring cities gather here to have Darshan and blessings of Lord Mahadeva.

Regular buses, taxis and private cabs connect the town to other important parts of the state. Hence, visitors can easily reach at the temple by using road-based transportation.
