Kerala Kadakkal Devi Temple Kadakkal
Kadakkal Devi Temple is the oldest Devi temple established in entire Kerala state. This temple has the unique way of worshipping. It is common belief of the local public that a person who worships here is blessed with the protection from Kadakkal Devi as she is the goddess of power, truth and prosperity. In the same temples complex three other temples are also located in very close vicinity. All the temples are located in different directions from the huge water pond near the temple. The temples are of Devi Temple, Taliyil Temple and Siva Temple. One of the main unique features of this temple that there is neither any idol is established nor is a priest employed there. It is believed that once Devi returned back from Tamilnadu journey and bring along her sister. His sister Aanchal situated near Kadayattu Kalari and Kadakkal Devi situated near Peedika. According to another belief, once Kadakkal Devi killed a trader of Tamilnadu and his son came at the place where Kadakkal Devi temple was established. He came to know the fact of Devi and become devotee of her. He made the sanctum sanctorum of the temple at that place inspite of taking revenge if killing of his father.
Architecture
The temple is well architecture in traditional Dravidian style. Though, some of the architecture has been mixed with Portuguese style of construction but major part has been built under Dravidian style. The place of main deity is made of stone covered with silver plating which has the look like “Ashtadhatu”. Garbhagriha has the area of 10’x20’x 21’. The area is one of the best sizes of Devi temples in Kerala. Internal features of the temple are its carving, made of sculptures and placement of idols. Entrance of the temple is made very easy for everyone and sufficient space has been provided for routine wandering of the people inside the shrine. External wall of the temple has been provided molding at the base and in the middle of the walls from three sides. Front side is adjacent with the corridor and verandah attached to the sanctum sanctorum. Dome of the temple has unique architectural capacities. A large Kalash, made of Brass is just fixed over the dome.
Festival
Kadakkal Thiruvathira Mahotsawam’ is one of the best festival celebrated at this temple. On the occasion of the festival, a large number of devotees assemble at this place to celebrate the festival with devotion and dedication. On the first day of the celebration, Pongal is offered to Devi by various women.
Thiru Mudi Ezhunnellathu
This event is also celebrated at this temple once in the period of twelve years. This tradition is like Kumbh mela is organised in north India. On this occasion a large gathering is the main attraction of this temple.
How to Reach
This temple is easily accessible by three ways of transportation.
By Air
Trivandrum is the nearest airport from this temple. From Trivandrum, a 46 kilometer road distance is left to reach the temple. Trivandrum is the main stop of the devotee coming from northern side to reach this temple.
By Rail
Trivandrum is the nearest railway station and various major trains are attached to this station on broad gauge line. From railway station, frequent bus services including state transport and private buses are available at fifteen minute interval to access this temple.
By Road
Nilamel is the nearest Bus terminus and located at 6 kilometers from this temple. Temple is close to the town. Road connectivity is better as various state highways and national highways are linked to this temple.
