Kerala Attukal Temple
During the festivals, visitors or devotees from all over the country visit here to participate in sacred festival. The temple is located only 2 km distance from renowned Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple of Thiruvananthapuram. This sacred Hindu worship place is devoted to goddess Maa Kannaki or Parvathi who is the main deity of the temple. As per the legend, kannaki was married to a rich merchant’s son Kovalan.
History
However, there is no proper history available regarding the construction time and date of this sacred temple yet according to the Hindu mythology; Kannaki was married to Kovalan, a rich merchant’s son. It is said that after some time Kovalan started spending all his wealth of a local dancer and forgot about his wife. However, when Kovalan had no money he asked money from Kannaki who gave her anklets to sell. He went to king Madurai in order to sell anklet. But unfortunately, queen had also lost her anklet which looked like Kannaki’s anklet. So Kovalan was caught by soldiers as a thief. When Kannagi came to know about this incident she went to king and displayed her second anklet. In order to prove herself she broke her anklets that contained rubies while anklets of queen contained several pearls. So Kannagi cursed Madurai city and as per the folklore, because of her pure chastity, her words became true. Moreover, according to legend Kannagi also attained complete salvation when city Goddess appeared to her.
According to legend, when kananki was going to her way to Attukal, in the form of a tiny girl, she met an old man and requested to help her to cross the road. When old man saw young girl alone she carried her to his home but she disappeared. At night, old man dreamt that little girl was saying him to build a temple on the place where she met him which is now known as Attukal. Hence, the renowned Attukal temple was constructed.
