Karnataka Shree Vishnumurthy Temple
The Shree Vishnumurthy Temple is situated in the Kulai town close to Surathkal which is about 15 km in the northern direction of Mangalore in the Indian state of Karnataka.
It is an ancient shrine of Vishnu and has a statue which dates back to 600 years old. The presiding deity of temple is Shree Vishnumurthy which is another form of Lord Vishnu.
Initially there were no evidences of temple complex but Venkatramana Hebbar who was a local archeologist as well as a historian, spotted a small shrine in a ruined state in the forest in 1911. The temple got renovated several times and is in use at present having an active schedule of prayers and festival celebrations.
The Shree Vishnumurthy Temple is located along the West coast High way which faces the eastern paddy fields plains. It is one of the oldest Vishnu Shrines in this region of Karnataka. The prominent deity of the temple is Shree Vishnumurthy which is another form of Lord Mahavishnu.
History
There are no hard and fast documents which may support the history of the origin of the temple. There is no legendary as well as chronological view related to the temple which can be availed easily. However, according to the opinion of Shri Gururaj Bhatt, a famous archeologist as well as historian in the South Kanara, the original age of the statue is estimated to date back to 600 years. There was a temple constructed and this shrine came into existence with the help of residents of the local region as well as surrounding villagers. Since then the renovation has been done a number of times and the work got accomplished in a step by step manner and is still in progress.
There are a number of statues found in this temple and the major deity is of Lord Shri Vishnumurthy, and the sub deities such as Lord Mahaganpati, Lord Subrahmanya and Annappa Panjurli Daiva.
How to Reach the Temple
Since the temple is close to the National High way No.17, there are several buses running from Mangalore to Udupi and would take halt in the Kulai district and it is merely 10 minutes that is at a walking distance from the bus stop of Kulai from where one can reach temple.
