Haryana Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple
According to Hindu mythology, it is the location where great Pandavas worshiped Lord Shiva in order to get his blessings to win the war of Mahabharata. Moreover, Guru Tegh Bhadur, ninth guru of Sikh community also stayed at this sacred place. This is the main reason; here visitors can see a Sikh Gurdwara besides Sthaneshwar Mahadev temple. During the festival of Mahashivratri, visitors and followers of Lord Shiva gather here to get the blessings of God.
History
According to the Indian history, this place used to be a capital city of Harshvardhana, the great Indian emperor. However, there is no proper evidence of its construction but it is said that the shrine was built during the period of Mahabharata. The shrine with an artistic dome-kind roof greatly follows Indian kind of architecture. The major attraction of the shrine is a sacred Shiva Lingam.
According to the folklore, the pond’s water near the shrine has spiritual power to heal various diseases. It is said, the pilgrimage of town Kurukshetra is not completed without visiting at Sthaneshwar Mahadev Mandir or temple. The shrine as well as the sacred pond are situated a walking distance from town Thanesar. The town of Thanesar got its name from Sthaneshwar Mahadev temple. According to Hindu mythology, Bhagwana Shiva was very first worshipped at this place as in Alingam form. It is said that Bhagwana Parshurama killed various Kshatriyas at this place.

Weather and Time to Visit
The climate conditions of Kurukshetra town are changeable. It means, during winters, the town becomes very cold and temperature dropping down to 2 to 1 degree Celsius and while summers it becomes scorching and hot and temperature rises to 43 to 44 degree Celsius. However, monsoon offers average rain falls in the town. So the best time to visit here from the months of October to March. However, devotees can also visit at sacred shrine during the festival of Mahashivratri.
