Delhi Yogmaya Temple
Yogmaya temple is an ancient temple located in Meharuli, New Delhi. This sacred Hindu temple is an ancient temple belonging to the Mahabharata period.
History
This is an ancient temple that is believed to be constructed by the Pandavas during the Mahabharata war. The temple was restored by Lala Sethmal during the reign of Mughal ruler Akbar II (1806-37). Yogmaya temple is situated in the premises of Lal Kot walls, the first fort in Delhi that was built by Gurjar Tanwar during AD 731.

Goddess Yogmaya who is regarded as embodiment of Goddess Mahalaxmi is worshipped in this 5000 year old ancient temple. The temple is regarded as one among the 51 Shakthi peeths and is a sacred place where the head of Devi fell when Kansa tried to kill her.
Significance of The Temple
Goddess Yogmaya worshipped in the temple is believed as sister of Lord Krishna. According to the ancient epics Kansa, uncle of Yogmaya tried to kill Yogmaya on Janmastami, the day Lord Krishna was born. But, Yogmaya escaped after envisaging the death of demon in the hands of Lord Krishna. According to another belief wife of Mughal Emperor Akbar II worshipped yogamaya after confinement and release of her child Mirza Jehangir by the British. The queen promised the goddess to offer flowers at the temple and also at Qutbudding Bhaktiar Khaki, a sacred Muslim shrine. The trend of offering flowers to the Goddess and the Muslim shrine is practiced even today and is celebrated as inter-faith festival Phool Walon Ki Sair for about three days in the month of October.

August to October is the right time to visit Delhi. If you wish to take up part in Navratri celebrations then visit the temple during Dasara festival. If you are planning to visit Delhi in the month of October then plan it during the Phool Walon Ki Sair festival to see wonderful flower punkahs offered to the deity.

- Flowers and sweet meats are generally offered to please the goddess. Do not carry wine and meat as they are prohibited as offerings to the goddess.
- In the temple premises you cannot see bells that are normally seen in other Hindu temples. So, do not search for one while praying the goddess.
