Delhi Laxminarayan Temple Birla Mandir
Laxminarayan temple is a beautiful temple located in Mandir marg situated to the west of Connaught Place in Delhi. It was built in 1938 by Raja Baldev Das Birla belonging to the Birla family of Industrialists. The temple was constructed with an aim to allow people of all religions including the untouchables. Lord Laxminarayan, incarnation of Lord Vishnu is worshipped in the temple. Inspiring citations from epics like Gita and Upanishads and other sacred Hindu symbols can be seen carved on temple walls.
History
Laxminarayan temple, the popular Hindu temple was constructed for a period of six years (1933-1938). The temple was opened for public in 1939. Mahatma Gandhi inaugurated the temple under the rule that people of all religions and untouchables would be allowed entrance in to the temple. The temple is visited by thousands of devotees every year including the international tourists.
How to Reach
By Air
Indira Gandhi International Airport situated in Delhi connects Delhi to other major cities of India. Air India, Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and other airlines operate daily flights from major cities of India to Delhi. Taxi services are available from airport to the temple.
By Rail
Hazrat Nizammudin, old Delhi and New Delhi railway stations in New Delhi connect the city to majority of cities of India. Metro train service, Taxis and Auto-rickshaw services are available at railway station to the temple. If you wish to use the Metro train service then get down at R.K.Ashram Marg that is about 2 km from the Laxminarayan temple. Auto-rickshaws are available from metro to the temple.
By Road
Buses operated by Delhi Road Transport Corporation connect Delhi to the bordering states. Bus transportation service within the city is also perfect.
Important Shrines
Goddess of wealth, Laxmi and God Vishnu are worshipped in the temple. Other temples in the premises of Birla Mandir are dedicated to God Shiva, God Ganesha, Lord Hanuman and Goddess Durga, known as Goddess of power. Shrine of Lord Buddha is also seen in the temple.
Significance of The Temple
Laxminarayan temple is popular for Janmashtami festival that is celebrated with great fervor and cheer. The temple is also renowned for its unique Nagara style architecture. Tall towers with huge amalakas, the circular motifs enhance the beauty of the temple. The exterior of the temple constructed with a mixture of red sand stone and marble reflects the architecture of Mughals who ruled Delhi. Beautiful gardens and water fountains in the temple premises make it a wonderful place to spend time in the evenings.
Weather and Time to Visit
The temple is open for public on all days from 7 am-12 am and 2 pm-9pm. February to April and August to November during which the climate in Delhi remains pleasant is the right time to visit the temple. Avoid summers and winters as extreme temperatures are observed during this period.
Accomodation
Guest house in the Birla Mandir premises provides accommodation to devotees visiting the temple from far off places. Scholars who wish to learn Sanskrit and know more about Hindu religion can reside at the guest house of the temple.
Tips For Devotees
Temple remains crowded at the time of Janmashtami. Hence, it would be hard to find accommodation at the temple guest house. Hence, make needed arrangements for accommodation well ahead.
