Assam Bhairabi Temple
This temple is located in the scenic and beautiful hill sights of Tezpur district of Assam state of India. Presiding deity of this temple is goddess Durga. Rear portion of this temple is facing the River Brahmaputra. Local population also calls this temple as Maithan and Bhairabi Devalaya. It is a local belief that daughter of King Banasura named Usha came to this place to worship goddess Durga. At a few kilometers distance, there are some ruins of the palace of ancient period are still available.
History
It is evident from religious books that the daughter of King Banasura was a devotee of goddess Durga and used this place for worshipping. Once the king wanted to stop his daughter to avoid worshipping the Goddess Durga, she opposed her father and also said if he wants salvation, he must start praising goddess and give up all evils otherwise she will have to teach a lesson through his daughter. King ignored this warning and continued. One day, Usha cut the hand of her father with a Khadga but not a single drop of blood fell on the ground. King was amazed then Usha told that was the indication from Goddess. Immediately Banasura converted into a big devotee of goddess Durga and constructed this temple.
Architecture
There is a fine carving find on all the walls of this temple. A devotee has to pass through a long staircase before entering into the temple. On the walls, various sculptures are present. Central hall of the temple is constructed in Rajput style of construction. Garbhalaya where the deity is seated, various inward arches have been made. Behind Garbhalaya a high dome is also fixed but only this portion has been constructed in Dravidian style. Resemblance with Gopuram can be seen at this temple.
Presently this temple is being looked after by the government and District authorities are maintaining all the administrative affairs. Traditional sacrificing custom of goats and bulls is still continuing according to local belief.
