Andhra Pradesh Sangameswarar Temple
Sangameswarar temple is one of the Lord Shiva Temples of Andhra Pradesh, located in Kurnool district. Construction of this temple was done on the bank of holy river Krishna. In the religious literature of Andhra Pradesh, this temple is also known with the name of Thirunana.
History
According to History, Vaisira’s son Kuber was presented with a flying machine to view the various temples of Lord Shiva as he was great devotees of lord Shiva. While flying over an area, he saw an amazing and unbelievable seen. In a pond various animals including reptiles were drinking water. He was amazed to see such integrity. He asked his father and got the reason that this place was blessed by Lord Shiva and thus such happening was done there. Kubera constructed a temple at that place in dedication to lord Shiva. Though, no historical evidences are found as a confirmation to this effect.
The Illandhai tree where that even was seen by Kubera is the main location of temple. He established a Shiva lingam at this point at later construction of temple done. The tree is having some unique features. It produces fruit in all the season and the same is used in the Puja at temple. On the occasion of Mahashivaratri, this fruits is also distributed as Prasadam. In this temple, a cow is located at the back of Lord Vishnu’s idol. It is believed that this cow is the symbol of harmony in the Shaiv and Vaishnav communities since long. The temple complex also called as Pancheswaram. In five Panchs of the universe Sangameshwaram, Siddehswaram, Kapileshwaram, Someswaram and Malleswaram are included. Outlook of the temple is very attractive.
Architecture
This temple is designed in the Hoysala pattern of construction. Dravidian style has been mixed in the Gopuram and the Garbhagriha of the temple. Seats of deities are in traditional pattern but outside area of the Garbhagriha has some alterations and changes from conventional pattern. Gopuram is very high and made of red stones but presently whitewashed. . This has three stories. A park created just at the Gopuram is centre of attraction for all. It also looks like a solid construction. Carving on the Gopuram is of geometric pattern. Temple has been constructed on a 13ft high plat form and eight stars including one verandah of 9ft width is the approach path of the temple. Outside the temple, there is a stone made shed based on four pillars and inside the shed rock cut Nandi is seated seeing the lord Shiva inside the main temple. Wooden Lingam was installed in the temple by Dharmaraj Yudhishthir during their exile. Diagonal carving on the ground floor is done with moldings. Pillars alongside the main entrance have been given some more support of small pillars. From first floor carvings on Gopuram has been done in shape of various idols either in dancing form or in worshipping form. Approach road to the temple is another amenity. Inside the temple there is a Garbhagriha where main deity is seated. Garbhagriha has a narrow corridor where just in front of the deity, Nandi is seated. On both the sides of Garbhagriha, Natraja is placed in Tandav posture. Beam and roof of this Garbhagriha looks like rock-cut style.
Attractions
This temple is a tourist spot also and Tourism department of the state developed it. During the construction of Srisilam Dam, the portion of the temple was submerged and then the same was dismantled and relocated on a hillock. Since then the natural beauty attract a lot of tourists every year. Boating, riding and swimming facilities have been made available at this site. There is also an elephant for general riding.

This temple is accessible by three ways of conveyances.
By Air
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport Hyderabad is the nearest airport to Kurnool and located at 210 kilometers. Passenger trains and buses are available to reach this temple. Cabs are also available from the airport.
By Rail
Adoni is the nearest railway station located at 11 kilometers from this temple. Road conveyances are easily available to reach the temple premises. Kurnool falls on Hyderabad-Guntakal railway line of broad gauge and well connected with the trains across the country.
By Road
Adoni is also the nearest bus terminus and located at 11 kilometers from Temple.. Buses and taxies are frequently available on affordable charges. APSRTC buses are available to take a devotee to this temple. National Highway No 18 connects Kurnool to this temple and other major nearby places.
