The Ksheerarama temple which is also known as Sri Ksheera Rama Lingeswara Temple is a beautiful temple situated in the Palakollu district of Andhra Pradesh. This temple is one of the Pancharamas Kshetras that is located in Palakollu near to Narsapuram in the district of West Godavari. Here Lord Shiva is known as Ksheera Ramalingeswara Swamy. Situated at a convenient location, this temple has eye catching architecture. The Ksheerarama Temple consists of 72 pillars in total which are made up of black stone, out of which the tallest is the lingam which is white in color.
After reaching Palakollu, the devotees can reach this temple easily by walking for getting darshan. The tower which is 36.6 mts high is known as Pedha Gopuram. This temple has a unique white Shiva lingam and is also one of the tallest towers of the temple.
History
This temple was built in the 9th Century. During old times, Maharishi Agastya told Sri Ram that he has gained black complexions after killing Ravana who was a Brahmin. In order to get rid of the black complexions, Sri Ram advised him of taking a dip in the holy river and also installs Siva Lingas. After installation of various Siva Lingas, Sri Rama, Sita and Lakshmana planned of going to Gosthani River and installing Siva Linga and for which Sita had send Hanuman to acquire it. Hanuman got late in getting it and Sita made a Siva Linga containing sand and snails. She did pooja and after returning of Hanuman, he got disappointed. Looking at this, Sri Ram assured Hanuman that firstly, devotees would pray in front of the Siva Linga brought by him and then that of Sita’s.
The Linga was placed 86,000 years ago and since then it has gained more spirituality.
Architecture
Talking about the architecture of the temple, the Ksheera Temple has a beautiful architecture of 9th Century. The temple is in the form of a tower and the height of the temple is 120 feet which was built during the Chalaukya period. There are 72 pillars in total in the entire temple which are made up of black stones. Only one pillar made of white stone is the tallest and is known as the Lingam.
How To Reach
By Rail
Not many trains reach Palakollu. Trains that are carrying passengers from Kolkata take a left diversion towards Nidadavole and then travel towards Palakollu via the junction of Bhimavaram.
By Road
Taking the NH5 highway, Palakollu can be reached easily. Palakollu is located at the National Highway 214 which is in the heart of Andhra Pradesh. This highway starts from the Kathipudi and extends till National Highway 9 which is between Machilipatnam and Vuyyuru.
Local Transportation
The temple of Ksheerarama temple can also be reached by local bus transportation. For reaching Palakollu from Vishakhapatnam, 7 hours journey is required. Also the private bus transportation is there between Bhimavaram and Narsapuram.
Important Shrines
This is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It has Shiva Lingam which can be seen from all four sides through the windows in Garbha Gruharam. Apart from Lord Shiva, Kashi Vishweswara, Sun God, Goddess Lakshmi, Veera Bhadra, Dundi Vigneshwara, Nataraja, Kumara Swamy and Radha Krishna shrines are also present in the temple.
