Vellore district is located in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The headquarters of the district is the city of Vellore. The district is named after this city only. The area of the district is 6077 sq. kms. It lies between 12° 15’ to 13° 15’ North latitudes and 78° 20’ to 79° 50’ East longitudes. The temperature in the district ranges between 14.6 to 40.2 degrees Celsius.the average annual rainfall for the district is about 795 mm.

The city was under the control of many kings like those belonging to the Pallava, Chola, Rashtrakutaa, Sambuvarayar dynasties, the vijayanagara empire, the nawabi kingdom and the british rule. The Vellore fort is an important monument that played a pivotal role in the history of the city. Ambur 1749 A.D., Arcot 1751 A.D. and Vandavasi 1768 A.D. were few battles fought in the location.

The Jalakandeshwara temple within the fort is a famous site. However the original dates for construction could not be established because of lack of proper evidence. The chief occupation of the district is agriculture. Paddy, cholam, redgram, ragu, sugarcane, oil seeds, etc are cultivated in the district. Majority of the population speak Tamil. However a countable size of telugu speaking and urdu speaking population can be found in the district.
