Tiruvannamalai is a northern district in Tamil Nadu. The district was formed in the year 1989. It was part of North Arcot district till and a separate district was formed. The district is surrounded by Vellore, Dharmapuri, Villupuram and Kanchipuram districts.

The total area of the district is 6191 sq. km. and it is located between 11° 55' and 13° 15' North latitude and 78° 20' to 79° 50' East longitude. The place is famous for Arunchala hill which is regarded by many Tamils as a great place. The region of Tiruvannamalai was part of Chola empire during 9rd century AD. During the medieval period, the region was ruled by the Pandyas and Hoysalas in the 13th and 14th centuries AD. Later on, in the 18th century, the region came under the British rule.

The district has many places to visit. These places include.

• Arunachaleswara temple: Arunachaleswara temple located on the bottom of Arunachala hill is a major Shaiva shrines. The lingam that is worshipped is classified as an Agni lingam. The origins date back to more than 2000 years.
• Sri Seshadri Swamigal Ashram: Sri Seshadri Swamigal Ashram was the place where Seshadri Swami lived in the 20th century. It is one of the holy places in the town.
• Sri Ramana Ashram: Sri Ramana Maharshi was a great saint from the 20th century. His ashram is visited by many people who seek inner peace and tranquility.
• Sathanur Dam: Sathanur dam is a large dam constructed on river Penna. The dam is located in Chennakesava Hills. The construction of the dam took place in the year 1958.
