Tiruvallur is a northern district in Tamil Nadu. The district is surrounded by Andhra Pradesh to the north, Bay of Bengal to the east, Chennai to the southeast, Kanchipuram to the south and Vellore district to the west.

The district is located between 12°15' and 13°15' North Latitudes and 79°15' and 80°20' East Longitudes. The total area of the district is 3422 sq. km. The district was split from erstwhile Chengalpattu district.

The region was under the Pallavas during 7th century AD. The Nawab of Arcot took over the place. In the 17 century, the region came under the Moghul rule after the Qutubshahis is Hyderabad were defeated. Later on after the downfall of the Moghul empire, the British took over the place.
