Thanjavur district lies to the east of Tamil Nadu in the central region. It is a coastal district. The district is located between North Latitude 9˚50' and 11˚25' and East Longitude 78˚45' and 79˚25'. The area of the district is 3396 sq. km.

Tanjavur occupies a great place in the history of Tamil Nadu. The place was once ruled by Cholas during 9th and 12th centuries. Cholas were responsible for the construction of many temples in an around Thanjavur and the neighboring places. After the Cholas, Thanjavur was under the reign of Vijayanagara Rayas until 1560. After the fall of Vijayanagara empire, the region was ruled by the Nayak dynasty until the end of 17th century. In the later part of 17th century, Thanjavur was under the Maratha rule. After the Marathas, the region came under the direct control of British.

• Brahadeswarar Temple: The temple is also named as the Big Temple. This temple was constructed during the reign of Chola king Raja Raja I during 10th century. The tower or the gopuram stands at 64.8 mts in length. The shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The lingam in the temple is also a gigantic lingam measuring 4 mts in length. This monument has been declared as a world heritage monument.
• Palace: The Palace near the Brahadeswarar temple stands a palace which was probably constructed in the 14th century. The temple was home to Nayaks and subsequently, Marathas.
• Kumbakonam: Kumbakonam is a religious place in Thanjavur. This place is home to temples  such as Sarangapani temple, Kumbeswarar temple, Nageswarar temple, Rangaswamy temple
• Darasuram: This place is home to Airateswara temple. This temple was constructed during Chola king Raja Raja II in the 12 century. The place has been declared as a world heritage site.
