On the basis of the census of the year 2001, it had a population of about 186,909 with appx. 93,000 females and 93,924 males. The literacy rate is 65.49 percent. Its total households are 50,982. The popular landmark of the town is the remarkable Kaveri bridge, which joins the Namakkal & Karur districts with each other. This bridge was made on National Highway 7 which passes via the town. Its opening formal procedure was held in 1949 by Sri Rajaji, who used to be the previous Governor General of India with the company of Sri Bhakthavthsalam, who used to be the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at that time .It consists of mostly irrigated fields. The major livelihood is agriculture here. Sugarcane, banana , paddy, turmeric , coconut trees, & the Pan leaf are mainly grown here. It is very prominent for the Pan leaf and it is also exoprted to numerous major states in India.Its famous food is Parotta which is mostly available in very restaurant there. One another famous dish Pancha Mugha is also mostly served here. Five (5)faced temple is also located here which called Vinayagar temple. Nansei Idayaru Mariamman temple & various other temples are also located here.
