Namakkal district is a district located in Tamil Nadu state in southern India. The city Namakkal is the districts headquarters. Later years it has become one of the major sources of Tamil Nadu economy.

Earlier, Namakkal district was a part of Salem district and it was carved from it and started functioning from 01-01-1997. It is surrounded by Trichy, Salem district Erode district and Karur. Historically, many rulers fought for this region from Cheras, Pandiyas and Cholas. Until 14th century the Hoysalas ruled this region. Later on, it was under the Vijayanagara Emipre till 1565 AD. Successively, Namakkal was in the hands of Muslim Sultans namely, Golkonda, Mysore kings, Marattas, Bijapur, Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan and finally the British took over in the 1800s.

The districts main occupation is agriculture, where it is mostly dependent on monsoon rains, tanks, well waters etc. Here, the region has maximum cultivated land under food crops. Main crops, pulses and oil seeds that are grown here are, Panivaragu, ragi, cumbu, Samai varagu, cholam and Paddy. Red gram, green gram, black gram and horse gram are some of the pulses. Oil seeds include groundnut, gingelly or sesame and castor oil. Where, commercial crops include cotton, tapioca and sugarcane.

Namakkal district tourist places are Namakkal rock fort, Tiruchengode and Kolli hills, Waterfalls is famously known as (AKASA GANGAI) that attract lot of tourists.
