Erode district is one of the districts in Tamil Nadu State. It is surrounded by Namakkal and karur districts on the east, Dindigal district is on to the south and Coimbatore and Nilgiri district is on to the west as its boundaries. The district lies between 10° 36” and 11° 58” North Latitude and between 76° 49” and 77° 58” East Longitude. The total area of the district is 8,209sqkm.

Periyar was the oldest name of Erode district until the year 1996. Until the year September 17th 1979, the district was a part of Coimbatore region. The district has three major tributaries that provide water supply for the district. The Bhavani, Noyyal, Amaravati rivers that runs adjacent to the mountains in the north. These rivers are useful especially for irrigation purposes.

The climatic condition of the district throughout the year is usually dry. During the summer season the temperature can increase up to 35°C (95°F). In the winter season the temperature goes down to 18°C (64°F). Erode district on average has a very good rainfall it is measured as 700 mm (28 in).

Erode district has almost 487 temples that are located in 4 taluks such as, Bhavani, Gobichettupalayam, Erode and Dharapuram. Places of Pilgrim centers that are mostly visited are such as, Bhavani sangameswarar Temple, Bhannariamman Temple, Erode Mariamman Temple, Chennimalai Murugan Temple and Magudeswarar Temple.
