Mindroling Monastery Buddha Statue
The Buddha statue established in the Mindrolling Monastery at Dehradun is a spectacular piece of art. The statue of Buddha here is the form of Maitreya Buddha.
Mindrolling Monastery, also known as Tibetan Monastery locally, is situated in 10 km distance from Clement town of Dehradun. It is considered as one of the most prominent monasteries of the region. This monastery belonging to Nyingma sect of Buddhism is famous because in spite of so many challenges in the form of enemy attacks and also from natural calamities, it has remained safe. However, its present structure is attributable to Rigzin Tendakingpa who established the present from in 1676.
The name Mindrolling depicts a place of perfect emancipation when understood in Tibetan language.
This monastery is a magnificent Buddhist Vihara located in the country, also known for the architectural supremacy it possesses. It has a 185 ft tall and 100 Sqft spread stupa known as Great Stupa, which was constructed for world peace in 2002.
This monastery houses a popular spiritual school offering facilities to Buddhist monks as one of the major study centres in the country. A college for advanced Buddhist Studies known as Ngagyur Nyingma Institute of Advanced Buddhist Studies is also conducted here.
Origin
The Tibetan had to flee their country in 1959, when China invaded their country and some of the Tibetans came to India. They, however, retained their faith and started building temples of worship at various places all over India. They constructed one at Dehradun which can be called a perfect blend of Tibetan architecture and the nuances of the present form of Indian architecture. As it is with other Buddhist monasteries, the Tibetan monastery at Dehradun emits faith, speaks out cleanliness and forms a place of beauty. The serene atmosphere maintained there wins the heart of every visitor for its calmness and aroma of peace.
Mindrolling Monastery was constructed as the largest among six principal monasteries of Nyingma School, believed to be the most effective centre of learning of Tibetan Buddhism. In Tibet, Buddhism flourished from the beginning of the 8th century and Mahaguru Padmasambhava was mainly responsible for that. There were four schools of Buddhism cultured those times, of which the Nyingma is known to be the oldest. The other three schools are of Kagyu, Gelug and Sakya lineages belonging to the New Translation School.

Monastery Architecture
The main temple would give one a spectacular view with its meditation hall and a row of colourful paintings and sculptures highlighting the history of Buddhism and itslineage. There are a quite a number of sculptures, every one of them representing the calibre of the artists who worked on them, besides conveying the messages of Buddhism.
Every aspect of the monastery is thought out in a grand scale: it has with it a large college, manicured gardens and as a remarkable piece of a five-storey Great Stupa. With its height of 60m, it is considered as the world’s tallest stupa, while it hosts a series of shrine rooms presenting the Tibetan Art works, murals and relics. To add to its beauty, the Monastery is in the process of building a huge stupa of Guru Rinpoche in the grounds.
The crown piece of architecture in Mindrolling monastery is the mammoth 35m-high gold Buddha Statue, which is dedicated to the Dalai Lama.
Tourism Features
Mindrolling monastery premises enable tourists to comfortably stroll along the grounds, walk through the Temples, having pleasant conversations with the Lamas there and also interacting with the small Tibetan community settled there. The entire area is peaceful and well maintained, while on the eastern side there is a complex having shops and restaurants, where one can enjoy a simple and delicious Tibetan meal.

To reach the Mindrolling Monastery, one can take a large tempo from the city centre on a fare of Rs 10, while an auto rickshaws can be hired at a cost about Rs 150.
