Kariavattom Outdoor Stadium is a proposed stadium which is being constructed in the space that is available in Kerala University Campus, Kariavattom Thiruvananthapuram. It is being constructed on the complete land of 37 acres. The design guidelines are supplied by NGS for preparing the Conceptual Design.  Kariavattom Outdoor Stadium is a proposed location for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 35th National games which will be held in Kerala.

This stadium is the flagship sports infrastructure Project for the government of Kerala which is being implemented in Public Private Partnership mode. The ground is designed for different international games like football and cricket. The stadium is operated by Kariavattom Sports Facilities Limited (KSFL), while has capacity to accommodate 50,000 spectators. This is one of the first stadiums in India which is coming up on the basis of design-Build-Operate and Transfer.

History

Kariavattom Outdoor Stadium is a proposed stadium which is under construction. This is first stadium in India which is coming up on the basis of DBOT. Besides, it is also one of the first stadiums in India which is being constructed on annuity mode. The Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Service Limited, is financing the project as it won the bid. This financial agency has formed a special purpose vehicle for constructing this stadium. Layout of the land is 37 acres and it is roughly estimated that the cost of developing this project will reach up to 160 crore.

How to Reach

Kariavattom Outdoor Stadium is located near some prominent landmarks like Technocity, Kinfra Apparel Park, Kochuveli Railway station, University of Kerala Kariavattom Campus, Kerala Highway Research Institute, Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education, College of Engineering Trivandrum, Kinfra Film and Video Park, Technopark Trivandrum, Thiruvananthapuram.

The stadium is in close proximity to the Trivandrum International airport which is just 10 kms away, besides it is also near the Trivandrum Central Railway station which is just 12 kms away. The Central Bus Station Thiruvananthapuram located in Thampanoor is 11.8 km while the Kovalam beach is 25 kms away from the Kariavattom Outdoor Stadium. You can reach this stadium by any public means of transport like rickshaw, auto rickshaw, public buses and private taxi and cab.

Ground

The ground of Kariavattom Outdoor Stadium is large enough built on 37 acres of land well suited for games like football and cricket. The playing area in the stadium shall be constructed in line complying the FIFA guidelines and ICC norms. It is expected to have facilities for different sports games like handball, table tennis, volleyball, and basketball. It will also have ample parking space for parking 2000 cars.

Renovation

Kariavattom Outdoor Stadium is under construction at present. Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Limited is financing the project as it won the bid. As per a rough estimate, approximately 160 crore shall be spent on constructing the stadium. This stadium is being developed on annuity mode and so the government will not have to pay for the initial 3 years. It shall pay nearly 140 crore in the coming 15 years. The company financing it is responsible for repair and maintenance of the stadium for the next 15 years even after construction. It is expected that the project shall be completed by the year end 2013.

The Kariavattom Outdoor Stadium is anticipated to have Olympic size swimming pool together with an aquatic center, convention center, retail space, swimming pools, club house, restaurant, exhibition hall, and a conventional center. It will also have seating capacity for 50,000 spectators. A new four lane road shall also be constructed from Kariavattom National Highway 47 to the Kariavattom Outdoor Stadium.
