Brief Description
Popular dish of chicken in Kerela can be made very easily. A basic Kerela chicken curry has flavor of blended spices of coriander, poppy seeds, fennel as well as cumin along with other flavors. Best part of the recipe of Kerela chicken curry is that it contains zero oil in it and uses coconut milk of about 100 gms. Not every curry can be made with zero oil.
Preparation Time 30 mins Cooking Time 40 mins Serves 4 Ingredients For Kerala Chicken Curry:-
- Chicken – 8 leg+thigh pieces or 650-800gms
- Ginger and garlic paste – 1 tsp each
- Curry leaves – 24
- Onion – 1 medium
- Large tomatoes – 2 medium pureed
- Coconut milk – 100ml
Spices For Blending
- 2 tbsp white poppy seeds
- 1 tbsp coriander seeds
- ½ tsp turmeric
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- 1 ½ tsp cumin seeds
- 2 tsp fennel seeds
- ½ tsp black peppercorns
How To Make Kerala Chicken Curry
- Make chicken pieces of about medium size.
- After making pieces, marinate them with turmeric powder, pepper powder, cardamom powder, chili powder, and coriander powder as well as garam masala for around 30 minutes.
- In pan, heat oil.
- When hot, put paste of ginger as well as garlic in it. Fry until they give golden brown color.
- Next, add green chilies, curry leaves, sliced onions as well as coriander leaves to it. Stir all this well.
- When it starts to give light brown color put tomato pieces in it.
- After a while tomatoes start to get tender. At that time, add aniseeds in it.
- Lastly, put pieces of chicken, salt as well as hot water in it. Cook it for some time.
- Remove from flame as soon as gravy starts to thicken.

Some Useful Tips
A special nutty flavor can be easily given to gravy by addition of poppy seeds. This flavor is further complimented by coconut milk as well as curry leaves.
