West Sikkim District is one of the four districts of the State of Sikkim. The capital of the district is Geysing also known as Gyalshing. The district as a whole is a trekkers paradise. History reveals that the ancient capital of Sikkim was Yuksom and it was situated in West Sikkim District. From 1642 Yuksom served as the capital for about 50 years until it was shifted to Rabtense. During the late 18th and early 19th century West Sikkim District was under occupation by the Nepalese for many decades. It was only after the end of the Gurkha war that West Sikkim District was returned to the Kingdom of Sikkim and later to the Union of India. The geography of West Sikkim District highlights the fact that the topography of West Sikkim District is mostly hilly and the slopes are full of rhododendron forests and the district as a whole enjoys a temperate climate. Consequently West Sikkim District is a trekkers paradise. West Sikkim District shares a common border with West Bengal in the south and Nepal in the west. The people are mostly of Nepali origin and the language widely spoken in the district is Nepali. The culture of West Sikkim District is by far Nepali due to the influence of the people of Nepali descent who came in search of work during the British rule . The other ethnic groups seen in West Sikkim District include the Lepcha and Bhutia communities. |
