Summer: Summers in Gangtok usually last from April end to June end. In summers the average temperature hovers around 18°C where as the maximum temperatures at that time touches 25 °C.

Monsoons: June to September is the season of rain showers. Gangtok usually witnesses heavy rainfall during Monsoon period. July is the period which many people say is not the great time to visit Gangtok as it witnesses the heaviest rain showers.

Winter: This is the time that Gangtok gets maximum footfall in terms of tourists. It does not get snowfall every year. In winter the temperature hovers around 4 °C - 7 °C. During this time, weather changes from bright sunshine to rain showers in a snap.

Spring and Autumn : During spring and autumn the climate is usually normal. The average temperature is at around 18°C at this time.

Gangtok is the word which is derived from the Tibetan word 'hillside’ which means a place full of hilly mountains. Till nearly three decades ago Gangtok was ruled by the Namgyal and Chogyal. It was only in 1975 that Gangtok became a part of India. Not many people know that Gangtok is the least populace state of India. Trekking, river rafting and parasailing are some of the activities that attract tourist It generates maximum revenue from tourism industry.

Gangtok is a bustling city with the population of 98,658 as per 2011 census of India. The ratio of male population is more as compared to female but in terms of literacy rate, females are not far behind. The male literacy rate in this is 85.33%, whereas female 78.68%. Gangtok city is a mixture of people of different ethnic backgrounds like Nepalis, Lepchas and Bhutia. They all have different cultures and celebrate their unique festivals all through the year. The New Year is celebrated in different months. For example, The Lepchas and Bhutias celebrate New Year in January and the Tibetans in January.

Saga Dawa is one of the biggest festivals in Gangtok and is celebrated in fourth week of May each year. Drupka Teshi is celebrated to pay honor and respect to Lord Buddha. Losoong Festival is celebrated as the local festival to welcome the New Year. Lhabab Dhuechein and International Flower Festival are also celebrated with great enthusiasm. Even though they all have different backgrounds but they all celebrate few common Indian festivals together.

People in Gangtok eat healthy and boiled food. The local and most famous food in Gangtok is ‘momo’ which is a Neapalian specialty and is made up of pork and sometimes other mixtures. Noodles, chowmein and Sikkim patties are some of the dishes that are famous in Gangtok. Hotels and other restaurant though offer other variety of food as per tourist’s convenience.
