This Nhava Sheva Port is also commonly called as Jawaharlal Nehru Port and it is considered to be the largest container port in all over the India.This port is accessed through the Thane Creek situated in Maharashtra at the Arabean Sea.
History
Across the Island city in Mumbai, this Nhava Sheva port is situated on the mainland of Konkan. This port was established to reduce the extra pressure on the port of the Mumbai and it is also extends up to 10 square kilometres (2,500 acres).This port of Nhava Sheva was established on 26th May 1989.This port is considered to be the largest port all around the world.
The planning to construct this Nhava Sheva port is come into existence in 1965.Since the biggest food shortage in India, the port is planned to establish to import the food grains.India got the capacity to produce the food grain after India undergoes a big green revolution. That is why the focus plan directed towards the traffic of containers.
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust take over the charge of Nhava Sheva port, which is a autonomous corporation that is owned by the India’s government. The main purpose to establish this port is to reduce the pressure on the port of Mumbai. The purpose of this port is also to enable all the importers that can also avoid good entry Octroi tax that is levied by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in the city of Mumbai at the time of municipal corporation jurisdiction.
Just to cover the distance between the Gateway of India and Nhava Sheva port, a ferry is started in Mumbai. The port security came under the charge of Central Industrial Security Force.

Facilities
JNPT has operated this container terminal of JNPT. This involves the 3 berths with Quay 680 metres of length.
A part of DP world named P&O had leased the Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal. This terminal has 2 berths with 600 metres of quay length that is commissioned in July 2000. About 15.6 million tons of cargo is handled by this port.The first ever container terminal as a private firm is known to be NSICT.
The Container Corporation of India and APM terminals had leased the Gateway Terminal. In the year 2006, this operation had been started. Just between the Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum’s joint venture, the BPCL terminal has been leased. The two berths of this terminal handled the refined products of petroleum and crude imports.Through the rail and road, this port is connected to the neighboring areas of the India and Mumbai.
Commodities Handled
Textiles, carpets, boneless meat, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, sporting goods, textile machinery are the few exports through this Nhava Sheva port. Other than this, nonferrous metals, electrical machinery, plastics, chemicals, vegetable oils, and aluminum were the basic imports through this port. The traffic loading cargos via North India, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Maharathra were destined.
