New Mangalore Port
The state of Karnataka and the Mangalore city is charmed with one of the major ports in India named as the New Mangalore port. The most modernize and highly technology embedded port has been provided for the development of the city. This port has the proven fact of enduring all the menaces of the climates. The location of port is in the north direction of the Kochi port and in the south of Mormugao that is around 170 nautical miles.

The establishment of this port has proven itself for the economic development of the city it belongs to but also to the state it is part of. The allied projects to the New Mangalore port were commenced in the year 1962 and the project got successfully closed in the year 1974.
The port got operational successfully on 11th January 1975. The New Mangalore port was declared as one of the 9th important port of India in the year 1974.
On the date 1st April, 1980 the New Mangalore Port was associated with a board for its administration and this board was given the name Port Trust Board. Originally the port was administered by the Central Government of India.The Port Trust Board since the time has been running successfully and is embarked as the 10th significant trust.
History
The then Prime Minister of India Mrs. Indira Gandhi inaugurated the New Mangalore Port on May 4th, 1974. The New Mangalore port is located on the west coast of India at Panambur, Mangalore. To the north of the New Mangalore port is the Gurupura River to Arabian Sea. To the south of the New Mangalore port is Mormugao port and is 170 nautical miles away and in the north at a distance of 191 nautical miles is the Kochi port. There is another port in the Mangalore city that is very old and has been named as the Mangalore bunder or the Hale bunder. The New Mangalore Port is situated in the Panambur city. The Mangalore bunder is to the south of the New Mangalore port. The Hale bunder or the Mangalore bunder is currently used only for fishing purpose and ferrying of the small goods.

Rail Network
A railway siding is provided through this port in Mangalore. The rail is connected to the following states Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu and also hinterland. The industrial cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore and Mumbai are very well connected to railways. The rail network is also well connected to the other commercial cities. To increase the traversing of the tons of cargo by rail the Hassan – Mangalore has been altered to a broad gauge and this has also made the New Mangalore port easy to reach to its hinterland. This has shortened the broad gauge line that goes to Bangalore from Mangalore and Chennai via Bangalore. Konkan railways have boosted the industrial development to the regions it has connected like having a direct connection between Goa and Mumbai.
Road Network
The New Mangalore port is well connected to the 3 National Highways and the three highways that it is connected to are NH17, NH13 and NH48. The nearest highway to the port is NH 17 and the highway goes from Kochi to Mumbai and connecting most of the important cities and towns via its route. The highway that connects the two major cities that is Mangalore and Bangalore directly is NH 48. NH13 connects the two other major cities that are Mangalore to Sholapur. A highway from Bantwal to Surathkal is being expanded to four lanes and this work of expansion is in progress.
Commodities Handled
The port is majorly used for exporting Iron Ore concentrates and pellets, iron ore fines, manganese, granite stones, coffee, cashew and containerized cargoes. The import of crude and petroleum products, LPG, wood pulp, Timber logs etc. is done through this port.
